Charlotte Group Aims to Strengthen Biotechnology

GREATER CHARLOTTE ADVISORY COMMITTEE HOLDS FIRST MEETING TO STRENGTHEN BIOTECH DEVELOPMENT

Former Gov. Jim Martin Chairs Group

CHARLOTTE, N.C., July 27, 2007 - The new 27-member Advisory Committee for Biotechnology in the Charlotte Region, developed by the North Carolina Biotechnology Center in cooperation with regional partners, met here today for the first time to begin mapping strategies to strengthen biotechnology development throughout the region.

The Committee, which will focus on short- and long-term biotechnology science and resources, economic gain, and job creation, is chaired by former Gov. Jim Martin, now with Carolinas Healthcare System. The Vice chair is Bob Wilhelm of Charlotte Research Institute. (Editors: a list of committee members follows this news release.)

“The Charlotte region is poised to move to a next level of biotechnology leadership and growth within North Carolina’s expanding biotechnology community,” said Martin. “The Committee is an important first: never before have regional leaders assembled to deliberately think about ways to ensure that the Charlotte region gains more biotechnology attention, resources, economic impact, companies, and high-paying jobs.”

The Committee will in particular consider current and new sectors for regional emphasis, including bioinformatics, nutrigenomics and value-added plants, nutrition, biomedical devices, investment support, and nanobiotechnology.

“The North Carolina Biotechnology Center is committed to biotechnology companies, products, and jobs across this state,” said Norris Tolson, President and CEO. “All of our resources and strategies help partners work to this end.”

Advisory Committees are a significant component of the Center’s strategy for statewide biotechnology development. Five regional offices serve Greater Charlotte, the Piedmont Triad, Eastern and Southeastern North Carolina, and Western North Carolina. Each is staffed with a director and an assistant, and each administers an Advisory Committee. Developing biotechnology statewide is a priority of New Jobs Across North Carolina: A Strategic Plan for Growing the Economy Statewide Through Biotechnology, available on the Biotechnology Center’s Web site, www.ncbiotech.org.

Marjorie Benbow is director of the Charlotte regional office, assisted by Clare Cook-Faggart.

The Advisory Committee will work to strengthen the structure of the regional community, and assist its continuing movement from strategies and goals to practical outcomes. The committee will specifically:

· verify – by members, presence and activities – that biotechnology demands sustained, high-level, multi-partner attention;

· identify goals, strategies and activities to strengthen biotechnology development throughout the region;

· catalyze or sponsor events and projects useful to the regional biotechnology community;

assist in the implementation of recommendations from New Jobs Across North Carolina: A Strategic Plan for Growing the Economy Statewide Through Biotechnology;

· recommend strategies and activities for regional biotechnology development; and

· serve as an advocate, voice and resource for biotechnology development.

Members are serving three-year appointments and can serve two terms for a total of six years. The committee chair and vice chair serve two-year terms. The committee will meet quarterly – in April, July, October and January – and will be administered by the Biotechnology Center.

The Biotechnology Center is a state-supported, non-profit organization. It was established in 1984 by the North Carolina General Assembly as the world’s first targeted initiative for biotechnology development. Its mission is to provide long-term economic and societal benefits to North Carolina by supporting biotechnology research, business and education statewide.

North Carolina is the nation’s No. 3 state for biotechnology, based on number of companies. About 400 bioscience companies operate in the state and employ about 48,000 North Carolinians.

Company Announces Wireless Inventory Management System

Company Announces The Development of Wireless Inventory Management System

Small and mid-sized businesses have not had the opportunity to utilize wireless inventory management systems like their bigger competitors until now. With the introduction of a PDA based system, initial investment in equipment is dramatically reduced.

The new system utilizes directed receiving, directed put-away and directed pick & pack to reduce the training time to successfully operate the system. Commands are so simplistic that temporary laborers can operate the system after 5-10 minutes of instruction.

The wireless system means that all inventory transactions are maintained in a “real time environment”. Real time means all management reports are current and all product availability decisions for pick & pack are made instanteously to reduce order cancellations and backorders.

After product data is entered, the system can be operational within 48 hours to reduce setup costs.

Company Announces Technician Dispatch Software

It has been extremely difficult for most small businesses to direct and manage dispatch technicians until now. With the development of the new Technician Dispatch Software, easy management is now possible with a low and affordable initial investment.

The system utilizes a well designed, easy to understand and use interface. The interface is almost self-explanatory which results in minimal training time.

The software allows for immediate input in call slips as the calls come in, and easy assignments to technicians. It allows you to view assignments by any category or technician and easily manage them.

After the initial installation, the system can be operational almost immediately.

Company Creates 5 Virtual Warehouses in 1 Physical Location

The new and improved system now allows for multiple virtual warehouses. This low-cost system now makes it possible.

This process is very simple and requires little training. It is extremely easy to navigate and associate warehouses.

By allowing multiple virtual warehouses, it is inventory management made even simpler. Reports can be more specific and more accurate, and information becomes more meaningful.

Once the number of virtual warehouses are decided and entered in and product is associated, the system is functional and accurate.

Marketing Staff Creates Interactive CD as a Unique Tool

Company promoting has always been a tricky business. With a interactive CD, prospects become intrigued and interested in your product, and at a more affordable rate than bulletins and flyers.

The interactive CD offers many available tools, and is easily customized to your business’ wants and needs. Simply give the information needed and it will be created, all that is left is for you to put it in the CD drive.

By being interactive, the viewer of the CD is able to navigate and view at their own pace. It keeps more interested, rather than just watching a presentation. Linking related information becomes easier and more desireable.

After information is received, the Interactive CD can be created and distributed within the week.
